Is a new home in your future? With the real estate market finally gaining steam after the crash of 2007/2008, it’s a good time to get back in the market or make the move to a better property. Clean, geometric lines are what define the modern style. There’s a fair amount of confusion out there regarding “modern” and “contemporary” — the two terms are sometimes used interchangeable. This, however, is incorrect; contemporary actually refers to homes built recently, regardless of the actual style. A proper modern home is one inspired by the historical art movement known as modernism. It is defined by open living spaces, minimal ornamentation, and the prioritization of function over form.

In recent years, the Craftsman style home has become incredibly popular and a common choice for new construction. The style originated with the arts and crafts movement of the early 20th century. Also sometimes referred to as “bungalow” style, it is characterized by use of natural materials — often a combination of stone and wood on the exterior. Large exposed beams are common inside and out, and the best examples of the style feature built-in furniture, fireplaces, and open floor plans graced by wood flooring. The overall feels is natural, yet clean and somewhat modern, as opposed to rustic or cabin-like.

The Colonial style originated in the 18th century, brought to the U.S. by colonists from Europe. Traditional colonials are rather uniform in appearance, with two windows on either side of the front door and a series of five windows on top. The windows and doors align vertically from floor to floor. Country style is simply a more modern interpretation of this style, with more variation in configuration – while still paying homage to the tradition.

Unlike other categories, a contemporary, sometimes casually referred to as “traditional,” home can somewhat defy easy categorization. Contemporary homes can reflect a wide range of styles; however, they follow common trends in recently built homes — including large, open floor plans, abundant windows, and a blending of indoor and outdoor spaces (depending somewhat on what local climactic conditions allow).

If there’s any home style that could be considered a timeless American classic, the ranch style is definitely it. Popularized across the country in the 1950s and 1960s, the style originated from the West and Southwest U.S. — on ranches, unsurprisingly. A universal characteristic of the ranch is single-story construction. Simple, low roof lines are also a common feature. Large ranch homes tend to be sprawling in appearance, a natural result of being confined to a single story.

Log home cabin
If the rustic look is your cup of tea, a log home cabin should be near the top of your list. Whether the construction is of actual logs, or just split-log cladding on top of a more typical structural frame, the look of a log home cabin is unmistakable — and truly American. With some things in life, it’s very true that “you know it when you see it.” A log cabin style home definitely falls into that category.
