The “Vertical Glass House” was actually an entry into an annual competition in Japan Architect Magazine from Yung Ho Chang way back in 1991. This year, however, the design finally became a reality in Shanghai, China by the Beijing studio FCJZ 22 years later. Built as a charity for architects and artists to live in, the 160 square foot concrete cube houses four stories, all with glass floors and no windows.
The original architect says it mimics “heaven and earth.” The only way to see the outdoors is through tiny, seven inch wide slits in the concrete from every floor. Inside, the color scheme and materials gives off and industrial feel to match the fortress-like compound appearance from the road.
