Terence Steven “Steve” McQueen was an American actor. Called “The King of Cool”, his “anti-hero” persona, developed at the height of the counterculture of the 1960s, made him a top box-office draw of the 1960s and 1970s.
Palm Springs, a desert city in California, is known for its hot springs, stylish hotels, golf courses and spas. It’s also notable for its many fine examples of midcentury-modern architecture. Its core shopping district along Palm Canyon Drive features vintage boutiques, hip interior design shops and buzzy restaurants. The surrounding Coachella Valley offers hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Description: “Designed by renowned Palm Springs architect Hugh Kaptur in 1964, the home was later purchased by Steve McQueen as his Palm Springs getaway. Designed as an intersection of two glass boxes and framed all in steel, the living room cantilevers over the mountainside with views to the massive mountains toward the west and the city below. The bedroom wing hovers over the large swimming pool. The home is located on a lot adjacent to the famed Elrod/Lautner home and features such architectural details as a floating staircase, walls of glass, and pecky cypress paneling. Carpeted with lush Edward Fields rugs, the home is mostly intact from when McQueen owned it. “Great Houses come with great materials”, Hugh Kaptur.”
