Shirley MacLaine, actress, has decided to sell her ranch in New Mexico. She was unsure what the asking price should be for this 7,450 acre property, so she consulted psychics, who advised her to list it for $30 million. She ultimately decided to list for $18 million.
The property includes a roughly 9,000 sq. ft. main house, a caretaker’s cottage, a horse barn, a yurt, a swimming pool and two ponds, as well as ranch buildings and equipment. The house is dubbed a “retreat” and includes a yurt, caretaker’s house, swimming pool, horse barn and chicken coop. Shirley MacLaine’s beautiful home is located in Abiquiu, NM and it is fitted for off-the-grid living with sustainable amenities including multiple greenhouses for growing food. MacLaine also built an underground compound beneath the house, equipped with four bedrooms, a living room and kitchen. Shirley has a stone labyrinth on top of the hill, which she said helps “listen to her inner guidance.”
Known as the Plaza Blanca Ranch, the property is in Abiquiu, N.M., about an hour’s drive north of Santa Fe. MacLaine said when she purchased the land about 20 years ago, she’d been looking for a place near Santa Fe because of its status as the new-age capital of the country. Note that Shirley spells her name as Maclaine, not “Shirley McLaine” like some spell it.
According to the website: “Made famous by local artists Georgia O’Keefe, these landscapes in a valley of the Rio Chama hills near the village of Abiquiu, when she made a series of paintings about the places she called “The White Place”, or in Spanish “Plaza Blanca”, this area of New Mexico is now on the grounds of the Dar Al Islam education center and mosque.Although private land the center welcomes visitors who wish to hike and view the awe inspiring landscapes which may be known from O’Keefe’s painting or the many motion pictures which have used it as a backdrop.”
More about MacLaine: “Named after Shirley Temple (who was 6 years old at the time), Shirley MacLean Beaty was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty, was a professor of psychology, public school administrator, and real estate agent, and her mother, Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean), was a drama teacher, originally from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada.”
