Idle hour Mansion was built in 1899 for William Kissam Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt first built his mansion in Oakdale in 1878 as a hunting retreat but the house burned down in 1899. On the second go round the house was made to be fire proof, hence the thickness of the current version. Today the house is part of Dowling College.
