450 Brickyard Rd, Woodstock Connecticut
In an otherwise normal neighborhood of moderate sized homes in Connecticut, lives Brickyard Castle (or Chrismark Castle): a 35,000 square foot custom built stone, rock and metal castle. This curious home took six years to build, with primary construction completed in 2009. The castle sits on a gravel-covered artificial man-made island, and includes a dark, mysterious history.
Built by Christopher W. Mark, the great-grandson of Chicago industrialist Clayton Mark Sr., one of the pioneer makers of steel pipe and who in 1888 founded Mark Manufacturing, once the fourth-largest steel company in the country. The home was once advertised as the home of an international modeling agency and contains a speculatively dark past.
Visitors have declared the place “weird” with massage rooms, group showers and secret spaces. Inside, there are floors covered with medallions, ceilings painted with cotton-candy clouds, and a coat of arms set in the wood floors.
